No one looks forward to a tooth extraction, but sometimes a tooth removal is necessary to protect your oral and overall health. E. John Baron DDS INC., your Santa Cruz dentist, explains why a tooth extraction is performed.
Space issues
Teeth may need to be removed if you have an overcrowding problem and are getting braces. Removing a few teeth will provide enough room for the remaining teeth to move into place. Some people are born with extra teeth. Because these extra teeth can prevent other teeth from descending, they must be extracted.
Infections
Dental abscesses can often be treated with antibiotics, but in some cases, extraction may be the best option to protect your health. Infections can occur if you have severe tooth decay or gum disease, if bacteria enters your tooth through a chip or crack, or if prescription medications, such as cancer drugs, weaken your immune system. If you do have an infection, you may need to take antibiotics for a few days before the tooth can be removed because infections can interfere with pain medication.
Wisdom teeth
Many people don't have room in their mouths for wisdom teeth, the third set of molars. If you have pain or develop a cyst or infection, your dentist will recommend removal. Removal is no different than extracting any other tooth when your wisdom teeth have broken through your gums. If your teeth remain below your gums, they are impacted and will require surgical removal.
Broken teeth
Injuries can fracture and break teeth. Although your dentist will do his best to save the damaged tooth, removal might be the best option. Missing teeth can be replaced with a bridge, dentures or dental implants. Failing to replace teeth can affect your bite and can even lead to further tooth loss in the future.
