Regular dental checkups are a crucial part of maintaining optimal oral health, but fear and anxiety can prevent some people from visiting the dentist when needed. Sedation dentistry helps patients relax and overcome their worries so they can receive the dental care they need. At our office in Santa Cruz, our dentist, Dr. John Baron offers sedation dentistry for patients who need help relaxing during dental appointments.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the use of mild sedatives to help the patient relax and feel less anxious during routine dental checkups and more complicated procedures. Although under sedation, patients are able to remain awake and alert but experience less anxiety because they are in a relaxed state. Depending on what is used to induce sedation, some patients might even experience slight amnesia regarding what happened during a dental procedure.

A major benefit of sedation dentistry is that patients with dental phobia or high anxiety levels can endure lengthy dental procedures they would normally be unable to tolerate in a single sitting. Instead of having to return for multiple visits to complete complicated dental work, sedation dentistry helps patients relax so everything can be completed in one visit. For example, sedation dentistry can help a patient undergoing several tooth extractions or root canals relax enough to have all the work completed in a single appointment.

Our Santa Cruz dentist utilizes several methods for helping anxious patients relax. Some commonly used methods include local anesthesia and oral conscious sedation. Local anesthesia is administered by injection directly in the area to be treated. This helps numb the area so patients feel little to no pain or discomfort. Oral conscious sedation involves the use of oral sedatives or nitrous oxide, sometimes known as laughing gas, to help patients relax.

If you experience extreme anxiety during dental appointments or have dental phobia, sedation dentistry can help. To learn more about how sedation dentistry can help you relax at the dentist, call our office in Santa Cruz at (831) 426-9200 and schedule an appointment with Dr. Baron.
